Every contribution goes directly to our support fund so that we can provide financial support for a student's fellowships experience. USC National Fellowships Through the national fellowships experience at USC, life-changing opportunities await for Gamecock students. Engaging in a national fellowship application process isn’t just about winning - although at USC, our students win... a lot. They also gain trusted faculty mentors, learn the ins and outs of creating a top-tier application and develop strong interview skills with support from our national fellowships team. The combination of this support with our incredible students’ hard work and potential often results in impressive awards like the Goldwater, Truman or Fulbright. 2024 Gilman recipient Tristen Davis assists at a clinic in Malawi. These same students frequently face the challenge of figuring out how they'll cover gaps in the funding provided. Because we want to make sure that no student misses out on such a valuable opportunity, USC’s national fellowships office established a support fund for students in need. Yes, giving to this support fund can help a student travel to their fellowship location or afford meals in a high-cost city abroad, but your gift might have an even larger impact. The Gamecocks pursuing these prestigious scholarships are driven by their desire to tackle the most critical challenges facing our communities, country and the world. Your donation might support the student headed to a U.K. Summer Fulbright who will one day help solve the global climate crisis, the Goldwater recipient who discovers a new genetic marker that’s the clue to curing cancer or the Truman winner committed to public service who will make a huge difference in health care access in rural and low income areas. Every contribution to our crowdfunding campaign goes directly to our support fund so that we can provide financial support for a student's fellowships experience — specifically students whose fellowships would not be possible without the added funding. Help the Left Bank Big Band travel to perform in the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and the Jazz à Vienne in France in July 2025. Support the Left Bank Big Band School of Music Left Bank Big Band, USC's premier jazz ensemble, has received invitations to perform at two of the most prestigious international jazz festivals: the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and the Jazz à Vienne in France in July 2025. To accept this life-changing opportunity, USC Jazz Studies needs your support. Your gift of any amount will allow these students to perform on some of the most famous jazz stages in Europe by directly supporting the travel costs for each musician. About the Umbria Jazz Festival Carlo Pagnotta, born in 1933, thus recounts the birth of the Hot Club Perugia. This idea took shape in the early 1950s from conversations in a record store in Perugia between him and a small group of jazz enthusiasts. From the experience of the Hot Club – the concerts of Louis Armstrong in 1955 at the Teatro Morlacchi and Chet Baker in 1956 at the Sala dei Notari remain historical – the urgency to create an event to provide a cultural alternative with international jazz names and a chance for tourism and notoriety for the beloved Umbria region. So Carlo founded Umbria Jazz, of which he immediately became artistic director, a role he still has today. The year is 1973, and a history of great successes, challenging moments and an inexhaustible passion begins, leading Umbria Jazz to change, modify, and evolve, always remaining focused on the main objective of linking a global vision to the promotion of a great small region. About Jazz à Vienne The Théâtre Antique, which was built in the 1st century CE, is Jazz à Vienne’s epicentre. Its unique acoustics and history make it an exceptional venue for both audiences and the internationally renowned musicians who perform there. The festival is a true blend of old and new, an authentic musical fusion. Rich in its diversity, it aims to be a pluralist space that is open to all.

College of Pharmacy Kappa Epsilon was founded by Zada M. Cooper in 1921 to unite and empower women in the profession of pharmacy. KE strives to develop leaders within the profession and community, and to provide its members with professional and philanthropic services. The Alpha Lambda chapter of Kappa Epsilon at the University of South Carolina was founded in 1966 and currently has 78 active collegiate members, which includes our newest pledge class consisting of 15 students. As an organization dedicated to serving the community and bringing awareness to our national philanthropies, we’ve hosted several service events throughout the past semester. KE members had the opportunity to help facilitate the Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s annual butterfly release to bring awareness to ovarian cancer. We also held a letter writing event through Girls Love Mail, where we wrote letters of encouragement to patients recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Over the month of November, KE organized a college wide food drive to provide all the sides needed for a holiday meal to our custodial staff. The food drive generated participation from students, faculty, and staff and we were able to provide bags filled to the top for all 15 custodial staff. November Food Drive Butterfly Release with Ovarian Caner Coalition 2023 Fundraising Focus: This year KE will have their 54th National Convention in Pittsburgh, PA on July 26-29. The Alpha Lambda chapter is required to send two delegates to represent our chapter at the national business meetings that will take place at convention. Part of this requirement includes paying for the two delegate’s registration fees. Since this is the first national convention in person since 2019, we would like to give more of our members the opportunity to attend their first KE convention by providing partial scholarships to go towards their registration fees. Contributions towards these fees would allow our KE members to experience the magic of convention and fall even more in love with our fraternity. Along with registration fees, we are looking for help to provide our members with a few items throughout the year. When student pharmacists decide to go through the recruitment and initiation process to join KE, we gift them their very own KE pin to proudly display on the lapel of their white coat. We also provide each graduation class with a graduation cord to commemorate their time in KE. Big or small, we greatly appreciate all donations to our organization and we thank you for your continued dedication to Kappa Epsilon.

Ultrasound Training and Hospital Outreach in East Africa

In March of 2020, a team of residents, attendings, and other medical and non-medical volunteers will embark again to Masindi, Uganda.

School of Music The Project: Each academic year, Opera at USC presents two fully staged operas with orchestra featuring undergraduate and graduate singers, instrumentalists, and pianists. The Opera program relies on annual support from donors to help supplement its budget to produce these shows and cover all of the production costs. Our goal is to raise $8,000 through contributions, both large and small, to offset the costs of costumes for the fall production of Floyd’s Susannah and the spring production of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Carousel. Who We Are: Opera at USC offers a truly comprehensive program for both graduate and undergraduate students, covering every facet of opera production, both on stage and behind the scenes. Singers, directors, pianists, conductors, marketing and public relations students and theatrical technicians get expert teaching and intensive hands-on experience in their respective crafts. Opera at USC is one of only a handful of colleges and universities nationwide that offers special training and practice for aspiring opera stage directors. Students can gain abundant practical stage experience by participating in the operas either onstage or off. In addition to the two fully staged operas each year, Opera at USC also presents an evening of One-Act Operas, often with a graduate stage director. Roles are open to undergraduates and graduates. The Impact: The students involved in the Opera at USC program are our future performers and leaders in the professional opera world, and each production they take part in hones their skills and prepares them for their professional careers. Having the hands on experience to perform in a fully staged production (with costumes, props, sets, and orchestra) prepares them for the next step in their careers, and it is vital for students to have these complete learning experiences in order to have the confidence to succeed in a professional capacity following graduation. These talented students are our future music educators and leaders, and will leave UofSC prepared to make an impact on the world through music. What Your Gift Will Do: Each contribution made to this campaign will go directly toward funding costumes for the casts of Opera at USC’s productions of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah and Rodger and Hammerstein’s Carousel. Carolina Girls The Project Each April, the Carolina Girls Dance Team travels to Daytona Beach, Florida to compete against some of the nation's top dance teams at the National Dance Alliance's Collegiate Championship. The team relies on the support of annual sponsors to finance expenses for this event. Our goal is to raise $13,000 through contributions, both large and small, to assist in financing the team’s trip. Who We Are If you’ve attended a South Carolina home football or basketball game, you’ve likely seen the Carolina Girls Dance Team performing on the sidelines of Williams-Brice Stadium or during timeouts at Colonial Life Arena. What you may not realize is that these dancers have spent most of their lives training and performing on stages all over the country with various competitive dance programs. Each dancer chose to audition for the dance team at the University of South Carolina, not only to support Gamecock Athletics, but also to continue their passion and be part of a competitive team. This season’s trip will be the Carolina Girls’ 13th trip to Daytona Beach for NDA College Nationals. Representing the University of South Carolina on this national stage is a great honor and the Carolina Girls are proud to have placed in the top five for the last ten seasons. The team most recently placed 2nd in Division 1A Team Performance and 3rd in Division 1A Jazz at the 2019 Championship. The Impact The members of the Carolina Girls Dance Team are all ambassadors of the University of South Carolina and the Department of Athletics. They represent the spirit and pride of our University and they excel in the classroom, as well as performance. Having the opportunity to bring national recognition to South Carolina through this competition brings another layer of excellence not only to the Carolina Girls program, but to the institution as a whole. This year's team is full of incredible talent and has a great opportunity to be successful at the 2020 championship this April! We love our home in McMaster College, a unique building on the National Register of Historic Places, but our courtyard is overdue for a refresh. A new brick terrace, seating and tables, and fresh landscaping will reclaim our exterior grounds into a usable space to hold class discussions, student meetings, art critiques, and more. Who We Are The School of Visual Art and Design (SVAD) at the University of South Carolina offers the most comprehensive visual arts program in the state. We offer undergraduate and graduate degrees in Art Education, Art History, Studio Art, and Media Arts in our 85,000 square foot facility designed specifically for the study and creation of the visual arts. Each semester, over 1,500 students enter our doors to take classes in our four areas of study. Help us offer more to our students. New tables and chairs, refreshed garden beds, and a dedicated space for students to meet, work, share ideas, and learn will turn our outdoor space into a functional extension of our classrooms. We envision our students engaging with our campus grounds, continuing their learning outdoors, and benefiting from a new space to sit, practice, and take a break. Our students want to foster a sense of community at the School of Visual Art and Design, and this space will provide them with room to gather, convene, share ideas, and collaborate. It is our vision that a redesigned and activated courtyard will become a gathering space for University Hill neighbors, children, families, and community members that goes beyond the SVAD community. The University of South Carolina Facilities crew have already begun to help us by removing overgrown plants. The next steps will require your help to purchase new outdoor seating, install a brick terrace, and remove invasive plants, as we begin to reclaim and re-adapt the space for future discussions, interactions, collaborations, and creations to take place. In March 2019, PRISMA/USC Emergency Medicine physicians will embark on a journey to Uganda to conduct our 3rd Annual Acute Care Training in Masindi. Global Health Initiative In March of 2019, ten PRISMA/USC Emergency Medicine physicians will embark on a journey to Uganda to conduct our 3rd Annual Acute Care Training at the OneWorld Health Hospital in Masindi. The first week will be spent working in mobile outreach clinics providing direct care to the local population, but the second half of the trip will be spent teaching a multidisciplinary group of local providers from all over the region. This year we will be providing hands on education focusing on cardiac emergencies including lectures, simulation scenarios, and point of care ultrasound teaching. In the fall of 2019, the team will be going to Mbeya, Tanzania to provide the same course to physicians, nurses, and advanced care providers. In both of these locations, resources for critical care resuscitation are limited, however, with appropriate training even the most basic of resources can be used to provide life saving care. Our goal, is to provide sustainable educational activities that can be used in the local healthcare sites to elevate the level of care provided. We hope that through this course we can equip attendees with the knowledge and resources necessary to return to their communities and teach other local providers who are unable to attend the training. Who we are: Attending and resident physicians from PH Emergency Medicine Program who have simultaneously recognized this need and partnered together for these training opportunities. The impact: Empowering and training medical providers by teaching a multidisciplinary course on a regional level will allow us to have a lasting impact in two of the poorest countries in the world. Help us Keep KeKe’s Legacy Alive through Scholarship School of Medicine KeKe Fuller was never your average little girl. Instead of a play kitchen, her playroom was set up like a doctor’s office where she wore scrubs and a surgical mask. On a visit to the bookstore, she picked out an illustrated volume of human anatomy and physiology and had her dad, a family practice physician, read it to her at night. Her fascination with medicine began even earlier. “When she was two and a half, KeKe saw me stretched out on the couch and asked me how tall I was,” said Sean Fuller, a 1995 School of Medicine graduate. “I told her, then she thought it over for a second and announced that she was going to be a six-foot woman doctor.” By the time she was six, KeKe had settled on becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon — she learned to pronounce the word — and informed her science teacher she wouldn’t practice medicine with her father because he was “just a family practice doctor.” Every time the family drove past the School of Medicine, she declared that’s where she would go. But all of that precociousness and childhood energy disappeared on Memorial Day weekend in 2013, when the Fullers’ little girl developed a fever. Severe respiratory distress soon followed and within a week KeKe was at the Medical University of South Carolina receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation through a lung bypass machine. “The hope was that her lungs would have a rest. But things never improved,” said her mother, Jillian Fuller. Forty-seven days later, KeKe passed away, the precise cause of her respiratory failure a mystery even after extensive testing by the Centers for Disease Control. “The hardest day of my life was when she died,” Sean Fuller said. “The second hardest was the next day when I had to tell her twin, Jack, that his sister was gone.” In the free fall of grief that followed, the Fullers considered one idea and another to memorialize their daughter. How can anything capture the essence of a cheerful little girl who wanted to become a doctor and save lives? “We no longer have our daughter’s future so memories of her become — ‘precious’ is not the word. You long for people not to forget,” Jillian Fuller said. “We want you to talk about our child.” To that end, the Fullers and many of their friends and family created the Kensley “KeKe” Fuller Memorial Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Sean Fuller, M.D. (’95 graduate, USC SOM) and wife Jillian’s six-year-old daughter Kensley or “Keke” -- as she was known, and is a merit-based four-year scholarship for a USC School of Medicine student who has demonstrated interest in community service. In the Fall of 2015, the first recipient of the Kensley Fuller Scholarship was selected. The recipient’s name, John Stathopoulos. John graduated in May of 2018 and is currently doing his residency at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Soon, a new scholar will be selected and receiving funding for all four years of medical school. “We will never send KeKe to the School of Medicine, but with this scholarship, we can help someone else attend,” Jillian Fuller said. Establishing the scholarship has helped the Fullers cope with the devastating loss of their little girl, and through initiating the Holiday Healing Tree Campaign, they hope to help others cope with their grief during the difficult holiday season by providing them with a unique and special way to honor the memory of their loved ones, while lighting the way for aspiring physicians. The Project The University of South Carolina School of Medicine, in partnership with the Fuller Family, has launched the Holiday Healing Tree Campaign to raise money to support scholarships for medical students at the School of Medicine, while also helping those who have lost a loved one cope with their grief. Last year was the inaugural year for the fundraising effort and nearly $14,000 was raised to benefit the Kensley Fuller Memorial Endowed Scholarship. The Fuller’s ultimate goal is to raise enough to provide a full scholarship to a student for four years. The Holiday Healing Tree is an 18 ft. Christmas tree on the grounds of the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine. Located in the Courtyard near the school’s memorial garden, the tree was donated by The Fuller Family Foundation, partnering with SC Internal Medicine, for the purpose of raising money to support the Kensley Fuller Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides a four-year scholarship of at least $20,000 ($5,000 per year) to students. Through a tax deductible gift of just $20, individuals can purchase a light to honor the memory of a loved one. The tree will be lit up in sections, from bottom to top, as lights are purchased. In all, there are 4,550 lights on the tree. This year’s goal is to raise $14,000 to benefit the Kensley Fuller Scholarship by December 11th. On the evening of Dec. 13th, a special candlelight vigil will be held, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the site of the tree, during which the names of each and every loved one who has a light turned on in their memory will be read aloud. The Fullers hope that this effort will help others experience a little bit of healing themselves, while doing good by providing critically-needed support to medical students. The Impact Most medical students graduate with more than $200,000 of debt. Currently in-state tuition, and related expenses, for the USC School of Medicine is more than 48,000 per year, and out-of-state tuition is double that. We want to ensure that any individual wishing to pursue a career in medicine has the opportunity to do so, and we want our medical students to have the freedom to choose what specialty they pursue, without the heavy burden of such debt on their shoulders. Make your gift by December 10th, and help the Fuller Family achieve their ultimate goal of eventually providing a full scholarship to a talented student. By purchasing a light in memory of your loved one for just $20, hopefully your heart will feel a little lighter this holiday season. This program offers dual-enrollment, where a student can receive both high school and college credit for completing the course. Currently, with tuition and fees, it costs over 200 dollars for a student to participate as a teacher cadet. Through this initiative we wish to fundraise in hopes of providing the means for more students from diverse backgrounds to participate in this program. Who We Are The USC Teacher Cadet College Partnership, housed in the College of Education provides instructional assistance and material support to our partner schools. Under general guidance from the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA), the primary goal of this initiative is to encourage academically talented, high-achieving, high school students with exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills to consider teaching as a career. An important secondary goal of the Program is to develop future community leaders who will become civic advocates for public education. Currently the University of South Carolina College of Education partners with 12 Columbia area high schools, where upon completion of the course, students receive 3 hours of college credit. The Impact We aim to improve high school student’s insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of schooling, and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America's schools. Trauma and Critical Care Training

The need for trauma/critical care training of medical professionals has been identified by local physicians at Masindi, Uganda and Mbeya, Tanzania. USC and Palmetto Health The Project: The need for trauma/critical care training of medical professionals has been identified by local physicians at sites in Masindi, Uganda and Mbeya, Tanzania. USC and Palmetto Health have had established relationships with these sites and the specific medical providers for 3-5 years. The goal of this short-term trip is to utilize didactic lecture and simulation medicine to further critical care training. In addition, the training will be made available to medical professionals from other nearby medical centers. In theory, this will allow the impact to extend further into the community. Last year, a multidisciplinary trauma training was implemented in Masindi which was attended by more than 40 regional healthcare providers and was very well received. Expanding upon the success of last year's training, we will be focusing on the management of critically ill patients in this year's training in Masindi. In addition, we will be traveling to Mbeya to replicate the multidisciplinary trauma training which was so successful in Uganda, at the request of local physicians. The training performed at this site will focus on the emergent evaluation and management of trauma patients. We hope to train a total of 80 to 100 healthcare professionals between the two sites. Who we are: Attending and resident physicians from USC Family Medicine Dept., USC Surgery Dept. and PHR Emergency Medicine Program who have simultaneously recognized this need and partnered together for these training opportunities. The impact: Empowering and training medical providers by teaching a multidisciplinary course on a regional level will allow us to have a lasting impact in two of the poorest countries in the world. USC Dance Department Project Description At the University of South Carolina, Dance majors enjoy many opportunities to learn from and perform choreography by nationally recognized dance professionals. However, extending our reach outside the classroom enhances our undergraduate experience by exposing us to as much artistic diversity as possible. This is where we need your help. We continuously seek out opportunities to expand our knowledge of dance off campus in the form of master classes in the community and performances by touring professional companies. This year, we are dedicated to sending our dancers to the American College Dance Association Conference, a national event that provides university students with opportunities to showcase their work in front of world-renowned artists. The Conference consists of a series of master classes, workshops, panels and performances that allow students to receive constructive feedback from instructors outside their typical academic setting. Our goal is to raise $7,500, which will fund our participation in this valuable experience. Who We Are The nationally recognized USC Dance Program has established a long legacy of excellence since 1976. Attracting a wealth of talent from across the country, the program consistently provides students with opportunities to work with world-renowned instructors and choreographers. Aiming to enrich the artistic experience of the students and the community, the USC Dance Company regularly presents choreography by George Balanchine, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, and professors Tanya Wideman-Davis and Thaddeus Davis. Our experienced studio faculty strives to instill a sound foundation of guided practice in the disciplines and principles of classical ballet, contemporary dance and jazz. The program has a long-established specialty in ballet infused with the energy of cutting-edge contemporary dance. The atmosphere at the University of South Carolina is able to facilitate each student’s growth as an artist through the combination of a rigorous dance classroom and studio environment and the depth and breadth of an excellent liberal arts education. Impact The experience that the USC Dance students obtain from attending the ACDA Conference is incredibly valuable in their overall undergraduate experience. The dancers’ exposure to professional eyes outside the university expands their networks for future employment opportunities, sheds new light on concepts studied throughout their dance training, and infuses their artistic perspectives with essential intellectual, creative and physical experiences. Participating in the adjudication portion of the ACDA conference could also result in a potential invitation to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center is Washington D.C. for the national conference in the spring of 2018! Help the USC School of Medicine and the Fuller Family raise $10,000 to benefit the Kensley Fuller Scholarship by lighting a bulb on the Holiday Healing Tree. School of Medicine Light the Way and Experience the Healing! The Holiday Healing Tree is an 18 ft Christmas tree located on the grounds of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine VA campus. Located in the Courtyard near the school’s memorial garden, the tree was donated by The Fuller Family Foundation, partnering with SC Internal Medicine, for the purpose of raising money to support the Kensley Fuller Endowed Scholarship Fund. The scholarship was established by Dr. Sean Fuller, M.D., ’95, and wife Jillian in memory of their six-year-old daughter Kensley or “Keke” -- as she was known -- who passed away four years ago. The Fund currently provides a four-year scholarship of $20,000 ($5,000 per year) to medical students. Establishing the scholarship has helped the Fullers cope with the devastating loss of their little girl, and through initiating the Holiday Healing Tree Campaign, they hope to help others cope with their grief during the difficult holiday season by providing them with a unique and special way to honor the memory of their loved ones. The campaign will also help the Fuller Family work toward their ultimate goal of making the Kensley Fuller Endowment a full scholarship. Today, most medical students graduate with more than $200,000 of debt. Currently in-state tuition for the USC School of Medicine is nearly $37,000 per year, and out-of-state tuition is $83,000 per year. The Fuller Scholarship is a four-year scholarship, which currently awards a total of $20,000 ($5,000 per year) to students. Through a gift of just $20, you can purchase a light to honor the memory of your loved one! The campaign’s goal is to light at least 2,000 bulbs on the tree and to raise $40,000 by December 13, but, in total, there are 4,550 light bulbs on the tree, and the School of Medicine would ultimately love to see each light represent someone’s loved one who has passed. The Impact The campaign will conclude on December 13, culminating with a special candelight memorial service at the site of the tree on the evening of Thursday, December 14, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. During the service the names of each person represented on the tree will be recognized. The Fullers hope this effort will help others experience a little bit of healing themselves, while doing good and providing critically-needed support to medical students. Your gift will help the Fuller Family achieve their ultimate goal of eventually providing a full scholarship to a talented student. By purchasing a light in memory of your loved one for just $20, hopefully your heart will feel a little lighter this holiday season. Who We Are If you’ve attended a South Carolina home football or basketball game, you’ve likely seen the Carolina Girls Dance Team performing on the sidelines of Williams-Brice Stadium or during timeouts at Colonial Life Arena. What you may not realize is that all of the dancers on the team have been training for the majority of their lives. They are talented athletes, as well as artists, who have spent years performing on stages all over the country with various competitive dance programs. Each dancer chose to audition for the dance team at the University of South Carolina, not only to support Gamecock Athletics, but also to continue their passion and be part of a competitive team. This season’s trip will be the Carolina Girls’ 11th trip to Daytona Beach for NDA College Nationals. Representing the University of South Carolina on this national stage is a great honor and the Carolina Girls are proud to have placed in the top five for the last eight seasons. The team most recently placed 3rd in Division 1A Jazz at the 2017 Championship. The Impact The members of the Carolina Girls Dance Team are all ambassadors of the University of South Carolina and the Department of Athletics. They represent the spirit and pride of our University and they excel in the classroom, as well as the performance arena. Having the opportunity to bring national recognition to USC through this competition brings another layer of excellence not only to the Carolina Girls program, but to the institution as a whole. With one of the most talented groups in Carolina Girls history, the team has a great opportunity to be successful at the 2018 championship this April! Preston Residential College The Project In May 2018, students from Preston Residential College will have the opportunity to travel to Morocco. This trip will be Preston’s first study abroad trip led by our faculty principal. Students will have unique opportunities to explore cities such as Rabat, Fes, Casablanca, and Chefchouen as they build community and experience a culture different from their own. Who We Are Preston Residential College is the oldest residential college in the state of South Carolina. We are committed to promoting passion, responsibility, community, and knowledge in our students as we build community and develop future leaders. Since 2011 students at Preston have participated in study abroad programs, but this is the first year that Preston is organizing its own faculty principal-led study abroad experience. A community study abroad experience is a way for Preston to understand how we each fit in to a global society. Our students will build community as they live and learn together in another country. The Goal Our goal of $4,000 will help fund different aspects of our trip to Morocco. It will allow us to meet uncovered needs and to significantly contribute to various aspects of each student’s trip, such as camel rides, henna art, cooking classes, traditional music, and pottery making. Critically, this funding will also facilitate participation by any current or former Preston resident who is a USC student in good standing. International support for travel can be difficult to find, but we believe that our students’ stories will impact future Preston students and encourage them to find ways to study abroad. Help us to take 15-20 students to Morocco in May 2018! The Impact We are delighted to welcome students on our first faculty principal-led study abroad trip to Morocco. Through participation in a spring cultural inquiry course, students will reflect on questions such as: What is the role of women in Morocco? What impact does socio-economic status have on life choices? How goes geography influence life choice? Is success measured differently based on gender? To what degree do religious values play a role in life choice? What is the role of hustling as part of work in Morocco? As this is a cultural inquiry course, we hope to attract students from various colleges and schools which will bring different perspectives to each of our site visits. We learn through experience, reflection, and through understanding from looking at the world through a different lens. We’ll take these questions and allow students to experience them during our trip to Morocco. By going out beyond own comfort zone, we can create a unique experience of what it means to live in someone else’s shoes. Group discussions will lead to understanding another culture better as well as facilitate better understanding of our own culture, beliefs, and values. Preston’s trip to Morocco will allow students to see, experience, feel, smell and touch what they have spent a semester learning about in their course. Funds raised in this campaign will allow undergraduate students to embark on a unique experience of traveling to north Africa and experience the culture of Morocco. Queering Ireland & the 19th Annual USC Comparative Literature Conference

Help bring this exciting international group of scholars, activists and performers to Carolina in May! Who We Are Queering Ireland is an international network of scholars, activists, and performers devoted to understanding and promoting cultural change. Since 2009, in four conferences across three countries, Queering Ireland has brought together scholars from North American and Western Europe, as well as Japan and Australia. International collaborations that have developed at the conference have led to groundbreaking scholarship, the recovery of under-represented voices, and a growing and vibrant community of collaboration and understanding. The Project In May 2017, the University of South Carolina will host Queer Times, the fifth international Queering Ireland conference and the 19th annual USC Comparative Literature Conference. This conference will bring to our campus approximately 60 international scholars, activists, and performers. They come from a range of disciplines—history, politics, literature, economics, film studies, theatre and dance, religion, and public health—all examining the status of queer peoples, politics, and performance in Ireland and beyond. The Goal Our goal of $5000 will supplement base project funding. It will allow us to meet uncovered needs and to significantly enhance the depth and breadth of conference attendees’ experience, allowing USC to maximize its goal as the international conference host. Critically, this funding will also guarantee participation by graduate student and junior faculty from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Canada, France, and the United States, as well as independent scholars who have no institutional support In times of economic austerity, institutional support for research and travel can be difficult to find, but we believe that our work will be far richer and more productive with the inclusion of the voices of graduate students, theatre and dance practitioners, activists, and others unable to secure funding to join us. Help us to bring an exciting and diverse international group of scholars, activists, and performers to USC in May! The Impact In 2015, Ireland became the first nation in the world to legalize marriage equality, not by judicial or legislative action, but by popular vote. How is Ireland different? What can the culture of Ireland teach us about sexual and racial minorities in other cultures? How do we understand sexual identities across borders, nations, communities, and through time? What is the role of economic austerity, migration, HIV, or social media in cultural and political change? What do we mean by inclusion or belonging? How can we think differently and more carefully about queer identities, trans identities, and cultural resistance? We learn through international collaboration, though coming to understanding in rich and sometimes difficult conversations with our global peers. Queering Ireland helps us to understand cultural change through careful consideration of one culture in its global contexts. Through our emphasis on transnational research and collaboration, this project addresses the university’s call for a responsible and informed citizenship in a complex and changing world. In addition, the conference specifically addresses issues of inclusion and diversity across disciplinary and national boundaries. To help celebrate, we ask that you consider joining our giving challenge in support of the Carolina Coliseum basketball renovation project. Our first, second and third round goals have been fulfilled because of your support! We are now advancing to the Fourth Round of the challenge. The renovation of the Carolina Coliseum will allow for both the men and women’s teams to practice and train in an elite facility, an integral component in helping student-athletes reach their full potential. The Project Helping rural African doctors deliver better emergency medical care- both through hands on training and system re-design using the following approaches: - Partnership with local national medical leadership and experts. - Partnership with other foreign partners. - Long term site investment. Who We Are University of South Carolina Department of Family and Preventive Medicine is full of faculty, residents and students who love to make a difference in the lives of patients and families at home and abroad. Our global health programs include clinical care, needs assessment, quality improvement and staff training and are always in collaboration with local partners and often other international ones. This spring in Tanzania, East Africa, two faculty will be returning to the city of Mbeya, the site of our first global health fellowship program that started in July 2012. We will be partnering with the local zonal hospital to bring our fellowship program back to the site for the first time in 4 years and to develop grant applications to fund long term projects. These projects will focus on quality improvement work at the hospital. Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital is the referral site for a population of 7 million people and the only zonal training site for new intern doctors so changes made can impact patient care throughout the region. The hospital also serves as the main trauma center, and in 2015 we partnered with our Emergency Department colleagues to do an initial training in the use of ultrasound in trauma assessment. This time we will be collaborating with emergency medicine doctors from Emory University and Muhimibili National Hospital (Dar Es Salaam Tanzania) to train local physicians in additional emergency medicine skills and following up from projects we performed last year. For Local Tanzanians Improved local emergency medicine care and hopefully other longer-term health care improvements locally and throughout the country through trained health care workers. For Local Doctors A chance to interact with doctors from other hospitals and countries and learn new skills to provider better patient care and hospital management (Quality Improvement) For University of South Carolina Students, Residents and Fellows More opportunities for mutual learning with physicians, nurses and patients from a very different culture and medical environment. Specifically a training site for a global health fellowship and likely for resident and student rotations. For University of South Carolina Grant funding and further publications possibilities What Your Gifts Will Do All supplies, equipment and medications used in the project will be those already provided by the hospital through the Ministry of Health of Tanzania. The project goal is to help use those resources as best as possible for the patients. US-based faculty have donated their time to this project, most of the remaining cost is transporting and housing our team! Donations will fund the following in order of priority: In country housing and travel expenses for the Dar es Salaam based Tanzanian team (2 physicians) In country housing and travel expenses for the visiting team. (3 physicians) International flight expenses for the visiting US based team. The University of South Carolina's Engineers Without Borders will provide safe drinking water to residents of the El Cedro Community in Ecuador. The Project In 2015, the World Health Organization stated that 1 in 10 people lack access to safe water. At Engineers without Borders at the University of South Carolina, we believe that such statistics can be improved through sustainable partnerships with local communities to accelerate social development. Hence, we have set out to provide safe drinking water to residents of the El Cedro Community in Ecuador. Deterioration of the existing water distribution facility in the community has deprived its 500 denizens from access to clean water, vital to their personal and economic welfare. Every donation will facilitate the renovation of the municipal water supply system, bringing safe water to the El Cedro community. Our Purpose For over a decade, Engineers without Borders USA (EWB) has brought sustainable change to less-privileged communities around the world. In devotion to this cause, Engineers without Borders at the University of South Carolina has invested its resources in engineering social change through community-driven partnerships in Ecuador over the last five years. Recently, we completed the construction of an irrigation system to provide year-round supply of water to farmers in La Victoria, Ecuador. Buoyed by this achievement, we have initiated a water supply project to provide El Cedro residents with safe drinking water so children and adults alike can live healthier and longer, achieving their dreams. The Impact EWB-USC accelerates social development in areas with low standards of living. Through our sustainable projects, disadvantaged individuals obtain access to basic amenities, providing more opportunities for their economic sustenance. EWB-USC nurtures future leaders of the United States. Our unique projects provide students with distinctive opportunities to cultivate management and collaboration skills, crucial to navigating the intricacies of both political and industrial offices. Such exceptionally prepared students will advance the Carolina community and the United States at large. EWB-USC empowers underprivileged children to become successful individuals in their communities. We inspire kids throughout local communities through special talks and fun activities during our trips. Thanks to the generosity of our donors in the fall we were able to bring in $7150! Our Spring fundraising week kicks off Friday, March 24 and will run through April 1st! When you combine our underwriting, fundraisers and generous donors we are very close to our goal so we have set this semester's goal at $2000 to hit our mark. WUSC is the student run radio station at the University of South Carolina. WUSC is one of the few remaining free format FM college radio stations in the country; we’re raising money to keep our station on the air! Every dollar raised will help us in a variety of ways-from paying licensing fees to replacing old equipment, every bit counts! Who We Are Left of the dial, right in your ear! WUSC is Columbia’s only free format non-commercial radio station that provides programming that cannot be found anywhere else! We have been on air since 1947 and proudly broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 100% student run, our DJ body is made up of an eclectic group of students, staff, faculty and alumni of the university who produce a wide variety of shows. With a 30-mile radius, we have a strong listenership in the Midlands and are committed to serving our local community with exposure to artists and music they might not hear otherwise. We can also be streamed online and have hundreds of daily listeners from all over the world! We take our mission to heart, our purpose being to educate both our listener and the DJ so our impact is twofold. Not only are we making a difference in the cultural offerings of our community but are also giving hundreds of USC students the opportunity to be a part of our station. The Impact Maintaining our rich history. WUSC provides our students with unique experiences that range from simply learning how to run a board and be a DJ to running the station itself. These leadership opportunities have not only provided our students with valuable professional experience but have also helped to create a strong sense of community for these students while at Carolina. WUSC supports local artists with programming specifically targeted to showcasing performers from the Midlands. In addition to our commitment to giving local artists on air exposure, we also coordinate several concerts a semester in conjunction with local businesses to showcase the amazing talent within our community. WUSC enriches the local community. We have an extremely loyal listenership in the Columbia area and beyond. As the only non-commercial, non-top 40 station in the Midlands, we provide programming that simply cannot be found anywhere else in the region. WUSC is truly Columbia’s oasis! What Your Gifts Will Do Every donation helps! All money raised will be used to pay our annual licensing and registration fees, update equipment and allow for us to attend the CBI (Collegiate Broadcasters Inc) Media Convention in 2017. Because WUSC is non-commercial and 100% student run, we rely on donations and underwriting to stay on the air. While we do receive some fees from the university, approximately 20% of our budget comes from self-generated revenue. Operating and maintaining a radio station can be expensive as our licenses and fees continue to rise. Cocky’s Reading Express™, USC’s unique and dynamic literacy outreach program, is helping the children of South Carolina love to read, and we need your help! We’re raising money to grow our program and reach new areas of our state. Every dollar we raise will help us to motivate kids to read more and help us to distribute great quality books to families in need. Who We Are Exciting for kids - educational for the entire family! Cocky’s Reading Express™ (CRE) brings the University of South Carolina’s beloved mascot, Cocky, and USC student volunteers to schools and communities in SC in order to motivate children to read and to ask for their commitment to do so every day. At every fun-filled CRE event, Cocky and his crew share many of their favorite read-alouds with young students, bringing them to life! After reading the stories, the USC student volunteers tell the audience that Cocky has brought each and every child a new book to take home! But…in order to get the book, Cocky wants them all to make a promise – “The Cocky Promise” – that they will practice reading every day. CRE provides a matrix of programs that advance from basic reading proficiency to the levels of literacy established in our family programs including health, nutrition, environment and financial literacies. The Impact Every book counts! We improve the attitude and behavior of children and families so that they are motivated to read more and maintain a home library. We have, to date, distributed over 105,000 books in all 46 SC counties to help children and families start or add to their home libraries. We encourage college students to become their generation’s leaders. We take USC students, faculty and staff outside of Columbia to show them what SC is really like and what SC really needs. We expect our students to improve SC while they are here and take a spirit of service with them when they graduate. We support higher education. In many communities, a CRE program is a child’s first interaction with a university. By taking our beloved mascot and USC student volunteers into every corner of the state, we encourage a student to not only graduate high school, but to consider college. Lasting impressions are made on students who will be first generation college students. What Your Gifts Will Do Your donation matters!
