Health Sciences Study Abroad in Nicaragua

This Study Abroad project provides students with an international, cross cultural service learning opportunity. Students from multiple areas of study travel abroad for a brief, intensive exposure to global health through participation in a one-week mobile primary care medical brigade held in rural Nicaragua.

Students will be exposed to healthcare disparities and encouraged to learn about healthcare differences in a low-middle income country (LMIC) and various reasons for health inequalities as related to health literacy, access to care, acute and chronic disease management, and public health.

They will develop an appreciation of Nicaraguan culture through student interactions with patients, community leaders, medical translators, and Nicaraguan medical team organizers. We partner with the not-for-profit organization OneWorld Health, which has multiple permanent primary care offices already serving the Nicaraguan people.

Evenings will entail group dinners, which include a time to debrief and share experiences. In addition to traveling to clinic sites, travel to and from the capital city of Managua provides the traveler with an opportunity to see the Nicaraguan countryside.

This Study Abroad classroom is developed and lead by faculty through the University of South Carolina’s Family and Preventive Medicine Department.  Our Department has collaborated with other USC schools including medicine, undergraduate, graduate, pharmacy, and nursing to provide an exposure to Global Health with a diverse team of learners.

Your gifts will allow students to embark on this trip for an intense learning experience that will provide them with educational and personal growth opportunities.

Please share this information with your friends, family and colleagues to help us achieve our goal.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to education and global health.
