Make a big impact by contributing to the Carol L. McMahon, MD, Diversity Scholarship Fund, which was established to infuse our other diversity endowed scholarships with immediately available dollars, enabling the SOMC to be more competitive when it comes to recruiting prospective, talented under-represented minority students. McMahon is the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion and Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology at the SOMC. She has held the position of Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion (f/k/a Minority Affairs) since its inception in 1996.
Support students today and tomorrow by contributing to the Everett L. Dargan Endowed Scholarship, established in 2005 in honor of an African American surgeon, educator and role model whose medical skills have impacted thousands of lives and who has inspired and mentored scores of physicians and healthcare professionals.
Support the education and research efforts of MS, pre and post-doctoral students in the biomedical sciences by giving to the Growing Diversity in the Life Sciences Financial Assistance Fund. This fund supports student travel to attend and present at national meetings, such as the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for minority Students, and other specialized meetings, and also makes available financial assistance to minority students exhibiting need.
Support scholarship stipends for students enrolled in the Genetic Counseling, Nurse Anesthesia, Physician Assistant, and Rehabilitation Counseling Programs by giving to the Growing a Diverse Healthcare Workforce Fund.
I am thankful for the scholarship and the opportunity it has afforded me to make my dreams of attending medical school come true! Without the scholarship, I would have had to incur student loan debt that would have taken many years to pay off, but I do not have to worry about that as much now. The scholarship also has enabled me to serve as a role model for other minority students who have dreams of becoming a physician one day. Hopefully, they will see me and believe that if someone who looks like them can do it, then why can't they?
As a PhD candidate, the bulk of my time is focused on my research. Thankfully, the living stipend that I am provided allows me to do just that. I don't have to stress about how I will pay for necessities like food and housing. As a result, I wholeheartedly believe that I have the capacity to be a more productive student. I am extremely grateful to be at the School of Medicine at UofSC because I know they care about the financial stability of its students.
